In this essay, I have demonstrated how Thoreau’s (1849) vision of a decentralised State, which is based on the individual’s freedom and conscience, is functional if it operates on the basis of ‘swaraj’. ‘Swaraj’, that is, self-rule, begins within the individual, who is then able to have the freedom to assess by him/herself what is moral and immoral and act accordingly.
